Evan and Ku-Ling Yurman opened the doors to their new TriBeCa residence for a house tour with Elle Decor

Evan Yurman is the son of jewelry company founder David Yurman and designs for the men's collection of the brand, while his wife Ku-Ling is a filmmaker and known for her documentaries. The couple have three children together, two girls aged seven and five and a boy, 18 months.

Due to the growth of their family, the Yurmans purchased a spacious new apartment in an industrial building in downtown Manhattan.

Architects Richard Moschella and Steven Roberts of Moschella + Roberts were hired to renovate the interior.

"We appreciate things that are artisanal and unique, that speak to use in a poetic way," Ku-Ling told Elle Decor.

For artisanal and functional purposes, Moschella and Roberts shifted the living and dining room wall to amplify the space while making the kitchen more efficient by narrowing it. Within the hallways, the architects installed panels of fiberboard in a rich speckled brown on the walls to recreate the look of leather or exotic wood.

"I love the high-low effect this achieved," stated Evan.

There is nothing at all low when it comes to the decor within the apartment. The living room space alone has 11-foot-tall industrial casement windows that boast a stunning view of the city and include an eclectic mix of furnishings.

A collection of mid-century furniture has been beautifully arranged in the family living room, including a pair of Nanna Ditzel chairs, a Hans Wegner armchair, a cocktail table designed by Handrik van Keppel and Taylor Green and a sofa by Wyeth. The room also includes a 19th-century bronze ram head, a 20th-century African bench, Kravet linen curtains and an Iranian rug from Double Knot.

"Some people pick a direction for what they collect — they'll choose a period, like Art Decor, or a favorite designer. We've always put things together as we've gone along. It's all grown organically," expressed Evan.

The kitchen includes a Sub-Zero refrigerator, custom hood by Vent-a-Hood, Calacatta Gold marble counter-tops and a range and microwave from Wolf. The kitchen table is Eero Saarinen from Design Within Reach and paired with Hans Wegner chairs, and the pendant light is a vintage designed by Max Ingrand for FontanaArte.

Hans Wegner chairs continue to find a place in the den, or conversation room, alongside a vintage cocktail by Milo Baughman, a sofa from DDC, an early 20th-century Turkish kilim rug and a panting by Park Ito.

The couple also have an appreciation for the arts. Many of the pieces found in the home have been created by friends of the Yurmans, such as wall sculptures by Anthony James and a Mark Flood painting in the hall to the master bedroom.

John Birch, a well-known gallerist in New York City who owns downtown design store Wyeth, found many of the pieces in the Yurmans' new apartment.

"I wandered into his shop about 12 years ago and stayed for four hours. I've been going back ever since. John finds the thing that has lived a perfect life. As someone who works with metals and stones and knows how they gain character from use, I can tell you that you can't recreate that," stated Evan.

In the dining room, one can find a Harvey Probber table, William Katavolos chairs and another vintage pendant light. The master bedroom features a Meridiani bed, a Serge Mouille wall lamp, a vintage daybed designed by Poul Kjaerholm, a side table by Wyeth, a vintage console piece by Paul McCobb and a '70s Beni Ourain rug from Double Knot.

"In my film work, I am always looking for the visual narrative. Your home is your personal narrative - it tells a story about you," expressed Ku-Ling.
