'Game Of Thrones' Update: HBO Confirms Series Will End After Season 8, Spinoff Being Discussed

HBO has confirmed that "Game of Thrones" will conclude with season 8.

During HBO's exec session at the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Saturday, the premium cable network's new programming president Casey Bloys was asked by Entertainment Weekly if he supports showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss' plan to end the hit fantasy drama with season 8, and he said yes.

"They have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do," Bloys said. "Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more, I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show."

In an interview with Variety last April, Benioff and Weiss said that they were considering closing the epic saga with a six-episode season 8. Bloys, however, said that the exact episode order for season 8 is not final yet.

Bloys also revealed that talks for a spinoff remain on the table. "We've talked about it," he said. "It's something I'm not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively. I'm not sure that [Benioff and Weiss] could really wrap their heads around it when they're just about to start production [on season 7]. It's a pretty intense production, they're about to start production soon. I'm open to it. The guys weren't opposed to it, but there's no concrete plan for it at this point."

The delayed season 7 premiere of "Game of Thrones" will take the show out of the 2017 Emmy race, but Bloys is fine with it. "[Awards] are not our main goal. The main goal is to do the best show for our subscribers and fans," he said. "[The Emmy fallout] is just something we have to live with."

The seven-episode season 7 of "Game of Thrones" will premiere in the summer of 2017.
