We're sharing this week's must-see art exhibitions in New York City including Mike Weiss Gallery, PACE, Park Avenue Armory and Luhring Augustine Gallery.
1. "Schools Out" at Mike Weiss Gallery
Mike Weiss Gallery presents "School's Out," a group exhibition that celebrates the excitement and freedom that come along the end of a school year and the start of the summer season.
The installation features several playful, energetic and stimulating works composed of paintings and stainless steel sculptures. The exhibition highlights artists' Deborah Brown, Jerry Kearns, Liao Yibai and Thrush Holmes.
The works will be on view through Aug. 6 and the gallery is located at 520 W 24th Street.
2. "GLASS" at PACE
PACE gallery presents "GLASS," a three-person group exhibition highlighting the works of Maya Lin, Kiki Smith and Fred Wilson.
The installation features works made in glass and the unique use of glass objects by each artist.
Works include a large-scale wall piece composed of glass marbles, an eleven-part floor piece to resemble drops of water, red glass stars and installations of glass items sporadically found and placed as tableware.
"GLASS" will be on view through Aug. 19 and is located at 537 W 24th Street.
3. "The Back Door" at Park Avenue Armory
Park Avenue Armory presents "The Back Door," an installation featuring the works of Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed.
The entire first floor is dedicated to Creed's simple, yet distinctive art strategies. This is the largest U.S. exhibition of his work to date.
"The Back Door" highlights the Armory's historical interiors through humorous and thought-provoking installations, paintings and performances that explore the human senses.
The installation includes a room half-filled with large white balloons, a transformed grand piano, lights going on and off, abstract paintings and a series of films.
"The Back Door" will be on view through Aug. 7 and is located at 643 Park Avenue.
4. "Relevant Notes" at Cara Gallery
Cara Gallery presents "Relevant Notes," an exhibition of works that include installations, paintings, photographs and sculptures from 11 artists.
The artists explore the constant change of our environment and the temporary nature of things today. As a result, the works will allow viewers to take a moment to acknowledge their surroundings before a shift occurs again.
Artists highlighted include Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Gianni Pettena, Bruna Esposito, Andres Jaque, Diango Hernandez, Igor Eskinja, Jason Middelbrook, Franklin Evans, Federico Luger, Matteo Berra and Ebtisam Abdulaziz.
"Relevant Notes" will be on view through July 30 and is located at 508 W 24th Street.
5. "Shapeshifters" at Luhring Augustine
Luhring Augustine presents "Shapeshifters," a group exhibition featuring works from Joe Bradley, Jeremy DePrez, Jeff Elrod, Ron Gorchov, Ralph Humphrey, Martin Kippenberger, Imi Knoebel, Robert Mangold, Jeremy Moon, Elizabeth Murray, Kenneth Noland, David Novros, Blinky Palermo, Steven Parrino, Joanna Pousette-Dart, Ruth Root, Frank Stella, Philip Taaffe and Richard Tuttle.
This installation features large-scale paintings that deviate from the standard format of a frame. Each artist has uniquely approached the traditional canvas and reimagined its potential by cutting the plane, combining materials and alternating textures to bring new life to paint on canvas.
These works became popular in the '60s and are known to teeter in a unique space between paintings and sculptures.
"Shapeshifters" will be on view through Aug. 12 and is located at 531 W 24th Street.
