While you may not have heard her music on the radio, there's a chance you've heard her music in movies or on TV. Banks' songs have been featured in "Divergent," "Red Band Society" and "Grey's Anatomy." Between touring with The Weeknd and being named a favorite of Ellie Goulding, Banks is a darling of the blogosphere and is on her way to becoming a star. Here are five things to know about the singer.
1. She Started Writing Music At 15 Years Old
Going through what she called "a tough time" with her family," Banks was given a toy keyboard by a friend. According to Banks, when she felt helpless, songwriting helped her tap into her feelings. "I could say anything I wanted — I could be as graphic as I wanted, I could be as real and as vulnerable and as angry and raw, and it was the most liberating feeling," she told Billboard. "I became addicted ever since."
2. She Doesn't Do Social Media, But Fans Have Her Number
Since the start of her career, Banks has made it quite clear that she isn't really into social media. "I don't have a Facebook, I don't do Twitter or Instagram or anything," she said. Banks lets her manager run her social media accounts but that doesn't mean she doesn't like interacting with fans. Banks once posted her phone number on Facebook for her fans to reach her.
3. She's Friends With Lily Collins
Thanks to her friend Lily Collins - the daughter of Phil Collins - Banks' music fell into the hands of some of music's best producers. Collins sent some of Banks' music to Katy Perry's tour DJ Yung Skeeter who quickly offered to manage Banks and hooked her up with record label Good Years. The A&R of Good Years suggested Banks work with Lil Silva and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs who ended up working on her album "Goddess."
4. Her Musical Influences Include Lauryn Hill
While Banks' style has been compared to the late Aaliyah, Banks actually credits Fiona Apple and Lauryn Hill as her musical influences
5. She Studied At USC
Before pursuing music, Banks went to college to study psychology. The singer attended the University of Southern California and wrote her thesis on the children of divorced parents — something the singer knows about.
Banks upcoming album, "The Altar," will be out Sept. 30.
