"12 Monkeys" fans are finally one step closer to finding The Witness — the person who collapses time, ushers the Red Forest in the world and unleashes a plague that wipes out almost all humans.
In season 2, episode 12, Dr. Cassandra Railly/Cassie (Amanda Schull) united with James Cole (Aaron Stanford) to locate the last primary in 1957 and kill him before the Messengers paradox him/her.
Unfortunately, Cassie and Cole weren't able to stop the paradox. The ensuing explosion from the Primary's death led to Cassie being in a coma. Cole survived the explosion and bid Cassie adieu because he wanted her to be happy. Poor Cole believes that he is a curse to the virologist.
However, Cassie wakes up in 1958 — six months after the explosion — and locates Cole to the same house she saw in the Red Forest! That's right — Cole is the owner of THE house Cassie has seen several times in the Red Forest.
After being separated for so long, the two finally consummate their relationship. Cassie and Cole make sweet love!
Unfortunately, Ramse (Kirk Acevedo), Zeit and Deacon (Todd Stashwick) died in Titan. The Witness wasn't alone, he/she had an army that ambushes and then kills them.
Now the lingering question that needs to be answered in the season 2 finale — who is The Witness? Here are some popular theories:
3. Cassie
Could future Cassie have implanted the Red Forest memory in past Cassie's brain? It isn't too far-fetched to think that she may be The Witness. The problem with this theory is that the virologist dies in 2018. She isn't immune to the virus so how can she — as the Witness — be in 2044? Also, it won't be possible for her to be with Cole in 1958 and Titan in 2044 at the same time, unless she has the time machine. However, "12 Monkeys" viewers know that it was destroyed before Ramse reached Titan.
2. James Cole
James Cole is the owner of THE house so it makes sense if he is The Witness. It could be that the years he spends with Cassie from 1958 onwards increases his love for her. It could be the happiest years of his life. Which results in him trying to save her from the plague so that they can be together forever in the Red Forest.
1. The child of James Cole and Cassie
This is the most popular fan theory. The Witness being the child of Cassie and Cole makes sense on multiple levels and even answers all the question about the harbinger of the apocalypse. He is fond of Cassie — who is his mother and he never wants anyone to kill Cole — who is his father. Additionally, the child of two time travelers could have abilities to travel through time without a machine. Also, the white-colored house could be important to The Witness because he grew up there.
The only problem with this theory is that when Olivia once traveled to the house after drinking the Red Forest tea, she saw a writing that said "1957-1959 — This Was Home." The Witness would not have been born until 1958 or even 1959. The only person residing in the house is 1957 was James Cole, which means him, and not his child, could be The Witness.
