"Mortal Kombat X" director Ed Boon is known for his playful teases, and, as expected, he had one to share about the recent spike in "Injustice 2" E3 rumors.
The news comes to Design & Trend via Boon's infamous Twitter account. In two separate tweets, he hinted that the speculation might possibly be true.
The first mention came on Tuesday when he said "Whaaaaaaat? 'Injustice 2' rumor?" and directed his followers to the source. Shortly thereafter, he sent a smiley face emoticon to a fan that said he thought the first one was great.
Obviously two nondescript tweets are far from a confirmation of anything, but there's a few details to note in this case. Boon is historically an Internet troll, but, for news this big, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for him to direct his followers to a report that he knew to be spurious. Not to mention that the message can easily be read with a twinge of sarcasm too. Those that watch Boon closely will know that he's quite the master of sarcasm. As for that smiley face, he'd obviously be happier with a fan's glowing review if a follow up reveal were ahead.
For those that missed the news, Gameblog.fr reported through a development source that an announcement was due later this month either during or before E3. The sequel has allegedly been created with the "Mortal Kombat X" engine and will supposedly release in March of next year. This news arrives days after a suspicious Samsung teaser on the matter also sent the Internet into overdrive.
The original "Injustice: Gods Among Us" was released in April of 2013, so that means "Injustice 2" would essentially arrive about three years later. Between that, "Mortal Kombat X" was shipped in April of 2015 with two DLC Kombat Packs. It's worth recalling that Boon teased those arrivals just as eagerly.
"Injustice: Gods Among Us" is a fighting game in the "Mortal Kombat" spirit with a cast of beloved DC Comics characters including Batman and the Joker. It's assumed that its sequel will offer a similar experience with some new perks.
In the meantime, however, "Mortal Kombat X" is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC and mobile devices.
