A new rumor currently circulating the internet is claiming that the sequel for "Injustice: Gods Among Us" is in the works.
"Injustice 2" will reportedly be unveiled soon and may even be announced right before the upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), which starts on June 14 in Los Angeles, according to the French website GameBlog.fr.
"Injustice: Gods Among Us" was first released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the PC. It pitted DC Comics heroes and villains against each other in a fighting game that's akin to "Mortal Kombat."
The game featured DC Comics characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Lex Luthor, The Joker, Harley Quinn and Doomsday.
"Injustice: Gods Among Us" was a commercial success and received rave reviews from critics. More than 400,000 copies of the game was sold during its first month of release.
The title was so successful it spawned its own comic book series and got a mobile version for both Android and iOS.
An Ultimate Edition of the game was also released in the fall of 2013 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and it came with improved graphics and all of the previously released DLCs.
The game was developed by NetherRealm Studios, the same studio that created 2011's "Mortal Kombat" and 2015's "Mortal Kombat X."
The French website says that "Injustice 2" or "Injustice: Gods Among Us 2" is once again being developed by NetherRealm Studios and will apparently use the same game engine as "Mortal Kombat X."
Though rumors claim the game will be formally announced sometime this month, the French website claims that "Injustice: Gods Among Us 2" will be released in March 2017.
The upcoming sequel will reportedly be available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the PC.
This is just a rumor as of now and should be taken with a healthy dose of skepticism. Even if the development of the game is truly in progress, there's a possibility that it might not be announced this month.
Neither NetherRealm Studios nor Warner Bros. Interactive have even teased the upcoming sequel, according to GameSpot.
