Sony's dominance of the current console generation doesn't seem to have any end in sight. According to an announcement from Sony, PlayStation 4 sales have surpassed 40 million. The number represents units sold to consumers globally.
"We are truly grateful for the enormous support from our fans and partners across the globe, which helped us achieve this significant milestone in such a short span of time,” said PlayStation chief executive Andrew House.
"We will strive to deliver even more exciting gaming experiences to our users, further driving the momentum and accelerating the expansion of the PS4 platform and its business this fiscal year by offering an unparalleled lineup of games, bringing our virtual reality system, PlayStation VR, to market and providing ground-breaking features and network services," he continued.
Consoles aren't the only thing moving for Sony, the company has also stated that "software sales also remain strong with more than 270 million" titles sold in stores and through digital downloads.
According to multiple reports from Eurogamer and Giant Bomb, a new PlayStation 4 does exist and is codenamed Neo.
Eurogamer reports that it had been "sitting on" many details about the new console but was waiting to confirm with another source. But now, since Sony is "openly sharing [the PS4.5 specification] with developers, Eurogamer states, "There is no doubt - this is real."
Eurogamer and Giant Bomb both obtained the same documentation, but Eurogamer's report had new information. According to the site, development kit prototypes are being sent to studios right now and a new "test kit" will make its way to developers later. A "second-gen" development kit will also be sent out in June.
Although the final system will not match the test kit's design, Sony is reportedly asking developers to not share any images.
