Milan Furniture Fair 2016: 10 Best Designs From Toyota, Marcel Wanders, Dolce & Gabbana

The Milan Furniture Fair a.k.a Salone del Mobile is an annual event held during Milan Design Week and showcases innovative designs from the world of interior and product design, furniture and lighting. Here are our top twenty picks.

Toyota Setsuna

Toyota presented the Setsuna concept car, a new model primarily made of wood during Milan Design Week. Setsuna means "moment" in Japanese, and this debut design is a symbol of time and the experiences family share when driving. The car features a unique selection of wood types to shed a new perspective on characteristics that are not as obvious in conventional vehicles. Even some of the cedar panels have already achieved lifespans exceeding 100 years. Even more impressively, the car was constructed following a Japanese method known as okuriai, an assemblage of parts that does not use nails or screws. This one-of-a-kind Toyota vehicle was designed by Milan-based Japanese architect Naohiko Mitsui.

Product and interior designer Lee Broom presented "Salone del Automobile," a van filled with his latest lighting collection. The industrial gray and white van featured a traditional Italian palazzo interior as the backdrop for his latest floor and pendant light designs. The '90s-inspired collection is comprised of understated monochrome graphics, which were highlighted from the van's illuminated floor. The unique concept of design within an automobile, a "traveling show," consisted of parking along the city's key design locations throughout the week and providing an overall unique visual impact for bystanders.

Marcel Wanders for qeeboo

A new Italian brand qeeboo presented a collaborative designer collection from Marcel Wanders and Stefano Giovannoni. The "B.B. collection" features a dining table, chairs, a floor and table lamp, comprised of transparent plastic bases and a graphic jacquard fabric of various colors, resulting in a quirky and artistic collection.

"Unveil" by GEOLUXE

GEOLUXE presented "Unveil" at Spazio Alatha in Milan's Tortona Design district. GEOLUXE provides some of the world's most precious natural marble to be used as surface material for various companies worldwide. From Salone del Mobile, designer Naoto Fukasawa created several massive sculptures comprised of expertly sliced top-quality stones, all showcasing the brand's carefully selected collection of marble.

"FRIGORIFERO D'ARTE" by Dolce & Gabbana for Smeg

Dolce & Gabbana presents a special collaboration with retro appliance brand Smeg, "FRIGORIFERO D'ARTE". This artistic collection includes several Smeg refrigerators that have been expertly hand-painted with decorative pictorials inspired by the Sicilian cart. Each design has a unique composition with some featuring references from ancient transportation and Italian opera, to mythology and the natural landscape of Sicily.
These Smeg refrigerators with such themes deeply rooted within the Italian culture, truly result in extraordinary works of art. Artists include Antonio e Guiseppe Bevilacqua, Biagio Castilletti, Damiano Rotella, Tiziana Nicosia, Adriana Zambonelli, Sebstiano Patanica, Salvatore Sapienza and Alice Valenti.

Lindsey Adelman @ Nilufar Gallery

New York-based lighting designer Lindsey Adelman's work is highlighted in one of Milan's most exquisite galleries, Nilufar. Known for her signature chandeliers which combine hand-blown glass and metal introduced in a form inspired by nature, Nilufar presents her first ever design featuring mirror. This is a special, one-of-a-kind lighting piece that blends her sculptural aesthetic with the new use of glass mirror — a true archetype!

MAD Architects Installation for Interni "Open Borders"

Mad Architects' designed this public installation for INTERNI's "open borders" exhibition at the University of Milan. The architectural design termed "invisible border" is comprised of several translucent polymer strips. Its semi-transparent surface and flowing structure alters with ones perception of space, and results in a rare sensual experience when embraced by the wind and sunlight.

"Credenza" at Spazio Pontaccio

Spazio Pontaccio presents a collaborative furniture series designed by Patricia Urquiola and Federico Pepe. The stained glass collection is comprised of three works that evoke contemporary patterns, colors and materials, yet possess an artisanal value because of its traditional design technique similar to one used in ancient cathedral windows. "Credenza" offers uniquely crafted cupboards, screens and low tables that become even more beautiful when light passes through them. The collection launched specifically for this year's Milan Design Week.

"Reality or Illusion? Giant is a State of Mind" at Foscarini Spazio Brera

Foscarini Spazio Brera is presenting a project concept specifically designed for Milan Design Week 2016 featuring a multicolored surface that experiments with size and proportion, ultimately resulting in a heightened visual experience. Foscarini transforms the space by including large versions of the brand's most coveted lighting designs.

"Lumieres Out of The Box" by Baccarat

Within the legendary setting of the Fine Arts Academy of Brera, Baccarat presents "Lumieres Out of The Box." This ethereal installation is comprised of Baccarat's latest collections designed by world renowned artists Marcel Wanders, Arik Levy and Hans Van Bentem. Each display is showcased within oversized versions of Baccarat's original wooden boxes -- boxes that have been used to transport its chandeliers for centuries -- resulting in a modernized exhibition which also pays tribute to the history and heritage of brand of Baccarat.
