A new innovative tattoo may soon replace the functions of your smartphone. This new tattoo will allow a screen to appear on your skin.

Japanese scientists showcased super flexible electronic skin, dubbed "e-skin," that are made from organic compounds that can withstand elements and avoid degradation from oxygen. The scientists also used technologies similar to that used from conventional smartphones and TVs for the tattoo.

It has been in development for some time now, and until now, models have been too robust to imagine in a consumer market.

Takao Someya, a professor at the University of Tokyo, noted, via Science Advances, that "The advent of mobile phones has changed the way we communicate. While these communication tools are getting smaller and smaller, they are still discrete devices that we have to carry with us."

In regards to how "e-skin" will function on skin, Someya noted that, "our e-skin can be directly laminated on the surface of the skin, allowing us to electronically functionalize human skin."

"We think that functionalizing the skin may replace the smartphone in the future," Someya told Live Science. "When you carry an iPhone, it is a bulky device. But if you functionalize your own skin, you don't need to carry anything, and it's easy to receive information anywhere, anytime."

In the future, people will be able to use this technology to monitor their health. Someya's team demonstrated a device that consisted of red and green OLEDs and a light detector. The three functions would monitor concentrations of oxygen in the user's blood.

"What would the world be like if we had displays that could adhere to our bodies and even show our emotions or level of stress or unease?" asked Someya. "In addition to not having to carry a device with us at all times, they might enhance the way we interact with those around us or add a whole new dimension to how we communicate."
