Yidu (Dianne Doan) could have died a hero in History's "Vikings."

In last Thursday's episode, titled "Portage," Ragnar (Travis Fimmel) drowned Yidu to death after she threatened to go public with his secret about the demolished colony in Wessex. However, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Doan revealed that her character was originally supposed to die in a heroic manner in episode 7, "The Profit and Loss."

"In earlier drafts -- I might get in trouble for saying this -- I died differently," Doan said. "It was a battle scene. I was prepared. I was so excited to be able to fight. But with revisions and rewrites came this scene. And part of me was so upset. ... It was so personal, for him [Ragnar] to do that. From what I remember, we've never seen him outright kill a ... well, it doesn't matter if it's a woman, but someone with that sense of brutality."

In the earlier drafts of the script, Yidu didn't go to Paris with the Viking warriors. "I think it was, in this past episode, when Roland [Huw Parmenter] comes in on the horse, and they're all attacking [the Viking camp]. Originally it was supposed to be the women fighting back. I was there to protect the children. And then it happened. Heroically, I will add!"

Of course, series creator Michael Hirst has a good reason why Ragnar should be the one to kill Yidu.

"Yidu herself was a complicated person and she, although [Ragnar] in theory set her free, didn't feel free. In order to keep him close, she got him hooked on drugs and made sure that he needed them as a way to stay alive and feel stay safe and in his orbit," Hirst told The Hollywood Reporter. "Killing her was a way of trying to free himself from his dependency on her and on the drugs."
