'Game Of Thrones': Carice Van Houten On Whether Melisandre Will Get Fans' Sympathy In Season 6

(Photo : Getty Images/Jamie McCarthy) "Game of Thrones" actress Carice van Houten said that Melisandre's belief system tumbles down in season 6, but is that enough for the viewers to feel some sympathy for the Red Woman?

"Game of Thrones" fans are going to see a different side of Melisandre (Carice van Houten) in the upcoming season 6 of the hit HBO series.

"The arc of my character is finally going into a different direction," van Houten told Entertainment Weekly when asked about her role in the new installment. "We see somebody whose whole belief system is tumbling down. She's completely confused. ... After all the security and strength and pride, now we see something completely different."

While that doesn't sound good for the Red Woman, van Houten admitted that it's something that she's been waiting for.

"It's the first time we see her really shaken and her decorum is dropping a little bit. For me as an actor, that was a really nice moment because so far I haven't been able to show any emotions," the 39-year-old Dutch actress told The Telegraph. "So I really liked seeing the cracks starting to appear in the character. And we start off with that in season 6."

She continued, "All of a sudden Melisandre is cold. She's never cold! But at the beginning of season 6, she has this bear skin around her to keep her warm. She is completely confused. She's messy, she does not look as contained as she always does."

Does this mean that viewers will start to feel a little sympathy for her character? Van Houten's answer: not that fast.

"To win the audience over, to be charming, that's going to take a while," she said. "But it was nice for me to play something different. The only thing is that this is such a big show and now a lot of people see me as this strong, stern, focused woman, when the roles that I think I am better at are the crazy, damaged, f--cked-up people. So, it's nice to see a little bit of that in Melisandre, as we do in season 6."
