'The Walking Dead' Season 6: Chandler Riggs Says Playing Carl With Just One Eye Is Not Easy

Since Carl (Chandler Riggs) has lost his right eye in the mid-season 6 premiere of "The Walking Dead," Riggs has to film most of his scenes with an eye bandage. And although Riggs appeared to be at ease playing his character with just one eye, the 16-year-old actor admitted in a couple of interviews that covering half of his vision while shooting is actually difficult.

"Working with one eye isn't easy," Riggs told Forbes. "It's definitely hard [because] you lose your depth perspective completely. When I'm shooting, I've had to alter my aim. I would normally close my left eye and use my right eye to aim. You don't realize how much vision you lose. You lose about 70 degrees of vision. It's tough."

But the teenage thespian said that wearing the eye bandage has helped him get into his character.

"It's harder to film, which makes it easy for me to play Carl because it's such a drastic difference in how I live," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "It's easier to make that change."

To lessen his discomfort, Riggs revealed that the producers asked him to keep his hair long so he doesn't need to wear the bandage every time. "They're hoping for me to keep it long enough so I cannot have to wear the bandage the whole time and push my hair up and see with my eye when I'm not shooting."

Despite the difficulties he has experienced while filming, Riggs' co-star Danai Gurira thinks that he's just doing okay with the eye bandage.

"He's cool, he's fine," Gurira, who plays Michonne on the series, told Variety when asked how Riggs has been adjusting to his new look. "He's psyched about all the different things that come with doing something different like this. He does have all these interesting adjustments that come with it, the way a character holds a gun and all that. But Chandler is amazing -- he'll always step up to a challenge and do great things with it, this is no exception."

Showrunner Scott M. Gimple also praised Riggs on how great he's dealing with this drastic change about his character. "I just want to say this as publicly as possible how great [Chandler Riggs] is with all of it," he told Entertainment Weekly. " I mean, it's a drag to have one of your eyes covered up all the time. It's a drag. It's far less of a drag than losing your eye, of course, but the way that Chandler is doing it and dealing with it is incredible. So we're very lucky to have him."

"The Walking Dead" season 6, episode 11, titled "Knots Untie," airs on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 9 p.m. on AMC. Check out the synopsis and promotional clips for the episode below:
