Richonne has just got real.

At the end of season 6, episode 10, titled "The Next World," Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) finally turn their platonic relationship into a romantic one.

The intimate moment between the two characters started with a gentle hand-clasp and was quickly followed by an exchange of intimate stares. Seconds after, the pair locked lips and went on to make love.

A lot of fans were shocked by the show's decision to take Rick and Michonne's relationship to the next level, but there were also some who expected that the duo would eventually fall for each other. But what were Lincoln and Gurira's first reaction when they found out that their characters would be hooking up for the first time?

In an interview with TVLine, Lincoln recalled how he learned that that he and Gurira would be sharing a sex scene.

"Danai had been acting weird in the makeup trailer a few days before [the episode started shooting]," Lincoln said. "The midseason premiere was quite busy for me, so I hadn't had a chance to read the script for [episode 10] yet. She was just acting weird and bashful and kind of shy [around me]. And I was like, 'What is wrong with you? Why are you not talking to me?' And she said, 'Have you read it yet?' And I said, 'What are you talking about?' And she said, 'Have you read [episode 10]?'

"And at that point I had only read through act 3," Lincoln continued, "So I said, 'Yes, it's great. The episode is tonally very different. It's funny and light.' And she said, 'No, have you gotten to the final scene.' And I said, 'No.' And then, of course, I [went back and] read it and I just screamed. I ran to [her] trailer and I said, 'What?! Why didn't you tell me!' And she said, 'I couldn't! I was freaking out!'"

Lincoln told The Hollywood Reporter that he "loved" the twist on Rick and Michonne's relationship, although he admitted that taking their bond to the next level is a "strange experience."

"We've been playing a certain complicated, difficult, respectful and loving almost familial relationship. And to step through the portal into this new place was really trippy," the 42-year-old British actor said.

While Lincoln was quite surprised by the Rick-Michonne moment, Gurira had an inkling that producers were heading in an intimate direction with the characters.

"It made sense to me since the "Clear" episode," Gurira told The Hollywood Reporter, "I remember chatting about it for the first time with [current showrunner Scott] Gimple, but, back then it wasn't his call [he wrote the episode under then-boss Glen Mazzara]."

"But when I read it I was still kind of surprised," Gurira told Variety. "There was something surprising seeing those names on the page doing that. Seeing it in writing was like, 'Whoaaaa!' I was kind of thrown."
