On last Sunday's mid-season 6 premiere of "The Walking Dead," fans saw Michonne (Danai Gurira) panic -- something that viewers rarely see her go through. But the sudden fear that the katana-wielding character felt during the episode was completely understandable, because even the most hardened and badass survivors of the apocalypse get flustered when the lives of their loved ones are in grave danger.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gurira talked about her character's "sheer panic" over the possibility of losing both Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) in season 6, episode 9, titled "No Way Out."

"Running through the walkers with Rick carrying Carl, it was just so painful and intense," Gurira said. "And him lying there and Rick running out the door and Michonne being caught in a panic -- I've rarely ever experienced her panicked. But she was facing losing both of them in one night. And that was just not going to happen. And there was only so much she could do for Carl at that point. [And] it's kind of a ride-or-die situation with going out there with Rick."

"It was a different angle of Michonne than I've ever experienced go through her, which was just sheer panic," the 38-year-old actress added. "She likes to be there and do what must be done. And in this moment, what can she do? And also realizing how much she loves both of these people. The love of them is so strong, there's no way I'm losing both of them tonight."

Talking particularly about Michonne and Carl's relationship, Gurira said: "He's actually the one who truly invited her into the group, and said she was one of them. Their closeness is beyond, so the idea of [losing him] is horrifying and horrific for her."

Meanwhile, despite the emotional pain that came with filming the episode, Gurira said that she actually enjoyed shooting the midseason premiere. "It was intense, but I really enjoyed doing the whole episode and all of us being out together and fighting together," she said. There was something really glorious in that. We left it all out there."

"The Walking Dead" season 6, episode 10, titled "The Next World," airs on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 9 p.m. on AMC. Check out the synopsis and promotional clips for the episode below:

"A simple scavenging run proves to be more tricky, when the survivors are not the only ones after a goldmine of supplies."
