While a lot of "The Walking Dead" fans are hoping that Glenn (Steven Yeun) is still alive after toppling into a sea of walkers in last Sunday's episode, there are critics who think that Maggie's (Lauren Cohan) husband better be dead, as the AMC series may face backlash from a number of fans if it turns out that the zombie drama is just faking the death of one of his five original characters.
In a recent interview, TVLine asked showrunner Scott M. Gimple if he has any backlash concerns surrounding Glenn's fate, and though he did not directly answer the question, he said that he "definitely want[s] viewers to have an emotional experience" whether Glenn is already dead or still alive.
"There are twists and turns, and bad things happen," he explained. "Ultimately, [the dumpster scene] is all part of a bigger story. I hope that the audience will just wait to see the greater story and see how it all plays out. They're kind of stopping in the middle of the movie, which they have to because there's a week between the reels. But we're still in the middle of the movie."
In a separate chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Gimple suggests that he's not worried about the show losing its credibility if Glenn survives that walker attack.
"In an episode that I wrote and story I helped craft with Carol [Melissa McBride], it very much looked like Carol died in season 3," he said as an example. "[But] she was [later] found in a cell [in the prison]. The show wasn't quite as big as it is now, but people went through that story and seemed like they enjoyed it. Carol went through something pretty big there."

After pointing out that definitive character death is the currency of the show, THR asked Gimple if he thinks that Glenn's potential fake death would make that currency lose its value. And the executive producer simply said, "Do you think the currency was devalued when that happened with Carol?"
