Since 2009, Studio Four NYC has been committed to providing individuals with an exclusive selection of textiles — designer fabrics, wallpapers, carpets and decorative pillows.
As one of Manhattan's newer textile design studios and showrooms, Studio Four NYC has managed to consistently grow in terms of its offerings. The company finds new ways to expand from sourcing vintage textiles to establishing an online shop called The Market, where customers can purchase one-of-a-kind items.
One of the most coveted characteristics of Studio Four NYC is its ability to provide clients with custom designs. Having a custom in-house weaving business, the company provides individuals with a venue to develop and realize ideas for a wide range of projects.
The welcoming duo and founders of Studio Four NYC, Kate Reynolds and Stacy Waggoner, aim to generate a workspace environment that is friendly and creatively authentic. They also want to provide a place for people who share a strong love for textiles.
Check out our interview with Kate and Stacy and don't miss out on their online shop, The Market.
MB: Tell us a bit about Studio Four NYC!
SF: Studio Four NYC is a unique textile showroom and shopping experience that seeks to inspire and motivate our clients' creative projects. We carry a curated selection of designer fabric and wallpaper lines, custom carpet, vintage textiles, and decorative pillows. We also have an online shop called The Market that is brimming with covetable items and always expanding.
MB: How did Studio Four NYC come about? What was the 'sign' or significant moment that propelled (you) to build this company?
SF: Well, who wouldn't want to start a luxury goods business in the depth of a recession? Our old company had been purchased by a much larger one and we decided it was a good time to take the leap, so we launched in the summer of 2009. We believed in ourselves, but we were really fortunate to have amazing clients and vendors who believed in us, too
MB: What facilitates your growth as a creative support and supplier of designer textiles?
SF: Really, it's the desire to always seek what's new and what's next in textile design — for instance, the variety of ways you can design a printed fabric is truly amazing — from the cutting edge digital prints that can replicate hundreds of colors in a single yard to gorgeous handscreened and handblocked linens and to batik and resist dye processes that are thousands of years old — we have them all.
MB: Can you describe the company culture at Studio Four NYC?
SF: We're a pretty young company, so we like to keep things light in the office. We definitely work very hard to provide the best customer service to anyone who finds their way through our doors, but we also don't want to intimidate anyone with formality. We always have some jams playing on the studio speakers and there may be one or two good old-fashioned, southern cocktails served up on Friday afternoons. And, of course, we're all a little textile obsessed, so when new product arrives, everyone is usually gushing about it.
MB: How often are clients coming to you for your in-house weaver and customizable options?
SF: Our custom weaving business is constantly growing — it can be a little intimidating for someone contemplating on their first custom order, but almost every new order turns into repeat business — to get a beautiful, custom made fabric in exactly the colors and fibers that work for your project. Amazing.
MB: What is 'that thing' that your clients can rely on Studio Four NYC for?
SF: Fresh new designs from creative minds around the world. And customer service. We love what we do and love the things we sell and really want our clients to love them too.
MB: Is there something you would want people to know about Studio Four NYC that perhaps they are unaware of?
SF: This place runs on coffee and chocolate.
MB: How is Studio Four NYC different from other fine fabric, rug and wallpaper companies? What makes Studio Four NYC unique?
SF: It's really a point of view — first of all, Kate and Stacy have to be on the same page about the lines we promote — we pick things we both like and that don't duplicate anything we already have — and somehow, it just works. Equally as important is getting the opinion of our great team here at Studio Four — our salespeople are very attuned to what makes sense for their clients.
We have some great established lines with a strong following and some brand new lines that have just launched and we love to champion the little guys and emerging artists. In a lot of bigger showrooms, a line that has only a small handful of designs can get lost, but every collection starts somewhere and we might look at an artist who has a few designs and think, 'Wow! This is great. Let's figure out what we can do with this.' So our clients have come to know us as the place to find both old favorites and fresh things they haven't seen.
MB: What can we expect from Studio Four NYC in the near future?
SF: We always have an eye out for interesting new things and all of our lines introduce new things throughout the year, so there is always something fresh on our racks. But right now, we are working to expand our online retail shop, so we can provide a convenient way to spread the love from coast to coast.
