The late Hunter S. Thompson wrote one of the most renowned pieces of journalism and pop culture of our time. "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream" was perhaps Thompson's most prolific work and an exceptional example of gonzo style journalism, which he founded.
"Fear and Loathing" became so famous that it was eventually adapted into a film starring Johnny Depp and Benecio Del Toro and directed by Terry Gilliam.
Now, according to Entertainment Weekly, "Fear and Loathing" is now being adapted as a graphic novel by Top Shelf Productions, a trademark of IDW Publishing.
Cartoonist Troy Little will be illustrating the graphic novel. He is known for Xeric-award-winning graphic novel "Chiaroscuro" and for his Eisner-nominated series "Angora Napkin," both from IDW Publishing.
He has some pretty big shoes to fill though. The original "Fear and Loathing" story was published alongside the illustrations of artist Ralph Steadman, who was a close friend of Thompson's. His drawings of the crazed lawyer Dr. Gonzo and protagonist, Raoul Duke have become emblematic of the story itself.
"Fear and Loathing" is founded in autobiographic incidents where Thompson (Duke) and his lawyer, Oscar Zeta Acosta took a drug-fueled journey to Las Vegas
In a press release, Top Shelf Editor-In-Chief, Chris Staros said " I'm so pleased that one of the first collaborative projects to come out of the Top Shelf/IDW relationship will be Troy Little's inspired take on a true classic of American literature ... One of the most unforgettable writers turned loose in one of my favorite cities! We can't wait to show you what Troy's done with it."
You can get a look at the first few pages of the graphic novel on the Entertainment Weekly link above.
The graphic novel is set to be released in October 2015.
