Earlier last month, the late comedian Joan Rivers' New York penthouse went on the market. Rivers' Upper East Side apartment was home to the celebrity for 25 years and is currently listed for $28 million.
The East 62nd Street, 5,100-sqaure-foot penthouse features four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms with five fireplaces and gilded antique boisserie paneling and columns. It would seem that Rivers didn't shy away from luxury, as the apartment boasts 23-foot ceilings, a salon, a wood-paneled library, a main bedroom suite with a private terrace and two bedroom guest quarters that include views of Central Park.
The penthouse is within one of the city's landmarked buildings that was originally designed by architect Horace Trumbauer. A converted limestone mansion built in 1910, it was later converted into nine, separate apartments in the 1930s. It is also said that one of the apartments had been the home of Ernest Hemingway for some years.
In 2009, the penthouse was first listed on the market for $25 million and was later relisted in 2012 for $29.5. The unique, ornate details within the home's interior are rare today. It was a space Rivers loved to entertain in and she often threw parties in its ballroom.
Party guests included prominent individuals such as Nancy Reagan, Steve Forbes and Martha Stewart. The penthouse is a New York treasure and one that the Rivers' family would like new homeowners to embrace as a place of laughter.
