The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has come up with a ranking of what it refers to as the "greenest" cars of 2015. As more and more automakers are offering greener driving options for the environmentally conscious, it only makes sense consumers would want to know which are the most eco-friendly.

That's where GreenerCars.org comes in. Greener Cars has taken most of the research and guesswork out of the equation for buyers who want the lowdown without all the legwork.

While there are still certain considerations dependent on individual driver needs that need to be taken into account, this list of the Top 5 Green Cars of 2015 is a good place to start for shoppers in the market for one of these energy efficient cars.

Beginning from the fifth greenest to the greenest of them all, here they are:

5.  Nissan Leaf - The Nissan Leaf is an all-electric, five-door hatchback in the compact range that is claimed to be the world's first affordable zero-emission automobile. It boasts room for up to five passengers, includes a navigation system, Intelligent keyless entry, automatic climate control, around view monitor and push button start, just to name a few of the extras.

The Leaf is powered by an 80kW electric motor and 24kW lithium-ion battery pack that allows it to travel over 100 miles per charge (mpc). It comes with a single-speed automatic transmission and gets an estimated 126mpc city and 101mpc on the highway. MSRP: $29,010

4.  Toyota Prius C - This new Prius is a hybrid synergy driven automobile that runs on gasoline and an electric motor. They work independently of one another or together. Like the Leaf, it's a five-door hatchback with seating up to five, but it doesn't come standard with quite as many interior bells and whistles as the Leaf.

The Prius C has a 1.5L gas engine with 73 HP at 4,800rpms and a 2-speed transmission plus a permanent magnet AC synchronous electric motor that, between the two, gets an estimated 53mpg city and 46mpg highway. This car really uses the electric component to bolster the performance of the gas motor for alternative energy more than anything else. MSRP: $19,540 - $24,475

The Italian Fiat 500 E is powered by an 83kW electric motor with a single-speed transmission and gets an estimated 122mpc city and 108mpc highway. MSRP: $31,800

The Chevy Spark EV is powered by a 100 kW electric motor and kW lithium-ion battery pack that's said to get an estimated 128mpc in the city and 109mpc on the highway. It's currently the only all-electric vehicle sold by GM in the U.S. MSRP: $31,800

1. Smart ForTwo Electric Drive - And finally, on the Top 5 Greenest Cars of 2015 list, there's the ultimate mini in the Smart ForTwo all-electric drive car that comes in two models. The only real difference appears to be the trim package and a few thousand dollars in price.

Both models seat two passengers, and they'd better be of no more than average anything from the looks of it. It comes with a 17.6kW battery and a single-speed automatic transmission that gets 122mpc city and 93mpc on the highway. MSRP: $25,000 - $28,000

While Greener Cars' first pick of the Top 5 Greenest Cars is roughly $4,000 cheaper (depending on the package) than its fifth, the Nissan Leaf, the Leaf still looks like the most bang for your buck when it comes to room, style, interior package and mileage.
