According to Buzzfeed, the lifestyle goods chain C. Wonder, founded by venture capitalist J. Christopher Burch, has officially gone out of business. Burch, the ex-husband and co-founder of Tory Burch and CEO of Burch Creative Capital, opened the first retail space of C. Wonder in 2011. The brand sold a variety of home goods, apparel and accessories to satisfy a range of consumers at an affordable price point.
The company had opened 32 brick-and-mortar locations since 2011 and it is now confirmed that all C. Wonder stores will be closing. On Monday morning, a meeting was held at the Flatiron, Manhattan office to inform nearly 100 employees that the brand will be shutting down. It has been reported that Burch was not present to speak on the matter. The meeting lasted a total of 15 minutes and all of the brand's social media accounts have been deactivated since.
Many within the industry claimed C. Wonder to be the result of "revenge retail" against ex-wife Tory Burch. She suggested the brand had too much of a resemblance to the aesthetic of her own company, with similar products and store designs. Ultimately the issue led to a lawsuit between partners, but the official settling of the case has not been released. Individuals believed the branding of C. Wonder was consistent, but the quality of merchandise manufactured in China was poor.
Although C. Wonder has decided to shut down, Burch has many other projects to focus on. His latest investments include a new home collection line with Ellen DeGeneres, known as E.D., his daughter's apparel company Trademark and his new acquirement of a resort on the island of Sumba, Nihiwatu.
If anyone happens to be interested in the remains, C. Wonder is having a flash-sale online with markdowns at 50 percent-off. The sale will be ending later this week.
